Community Beacons for physical, mental and social services
LA’s Promise turns neighborhood schools into community hubs that offer services and opportunities all day long. LA’s Promise manages and screens partners who provide a vast array of wraparound services to students and families. To accomplish widespread access to thousands, LA’s Promise and its partners integrate these services into and through the school day facilitating universal access to fundamental services for all students and radically increasing access.
LA’s Promise believes that parents, guardians, caretakers and families are key partners in achieving a school vision and through the school community transformation. Because of the importance of parent engagement in each student’s success, LA's Promise staffs each campus with a Community/Parent representative who works out of a full service Parent and Family Center. This Parent Representative, often a community member or parent themselves, ensure that the Parent Center is a vibrant and welcoming location and a key part of the school’s culture. With on going parent education, volunteer, leadership and advocacy opportunities and on-going parent communication, LA’s Promise in partners with school leadership and staff and works with parents to overcome barriers to school involvement, academic achievement and family engagement. Our Director of Parent Engagement manages all parent programming. Key programs include:
Promise Parent College: A signature program of LA’s Promise, Promise Parent College invites all neighborhood parent and guardians to engage and learn about their roles, rights and responsibilities as parents and caregivers. One Saturdays each month, parents gather on one of our campuses ad attend classes taught by trained Promise Parent College instructors.
Parent and Family Centers/Programming: Each campus has a dedicated Parent and Family center that remains open when the campus is open. Classes that range from cardio vascular fitness, knitting, the college application process and financial aid and many others are offered through the parent centers each week.
Parent and Family Action Teams: A typical school campus has so much to be done during the course of a day and Parent and Family Action teams take much of that on. Whether it’s supervision, campus beautification or assisting with breakfast in the classroom, our parent volunteer are well trained and always ready to do whatever needs to be done.
LA’s Promise believes that successful student are healthy students and that since school is the place to learn, student must learn about their health. We define “health” as physical health mental and supporting the community’s health. And we work with a multitude of community partners to ensure that all students and their families have the opportunity to pursue good health ad wellness.
With the Mark Ridley Thomas Wellness Center at Manual Arts High School as our anchor, LA”s Promise and its many may dedicated partners provide information, services, and healthy opportunities to all families in our network of schools. We bring mobile vision and dental clinics to campus to ensure that all students have access to these vital services. We support an insurance benefits counselor to educate and enroll our families in free and affordable health insurance options. We offer health-centered activities on campus such as school gardens on every campus and healthy cooking classes for students offered by our partner the American Heart Association. We provide workshops on myriad health topics ranging from cardiovascular health to nutrition to infant development. We support and host health fairs on campus for our families bringing more resources and information close to home. We support on site work out centers for our school community as well as provide exercise and movement classes and organized lunchtime physical activity for our middle school students.
We partner with many community organization to engage our students and families around health policy and advocacy in subjects ranging from food justice and school food to reproductive health rights and access to care.
7 to 7
7 to 7 is LA’s Promise’s array of before, during and after school programs designed to make the school sit e a trusted and enriching community hub for opportunities to learn and grow. Partnering with dozens of community partners and LAUSD”s Beyond the Bell program, we expand and deepen the menu of activities and programs available for our students. Ranging from tutoring tutoring, sports, field trips, civic activity and advocacy, fine arts, spoken word, robotics and coding and many more, 7-7 continues to engage students in meaningful activities throughout an extended engaging an holistic day.
Off campus, we engage many students in life changing mentorship and internships with trusted partners. We assist students with application, help them prepare for interviews and ensure they have transportation to and from their internships.
A college preparatory education for every neighborhood child is the fundamental mission of LA's Promise. Through a network of leading businesses and other partners, LA's Promise ensures every students access to life-changing opportunities. As a focus inside and outside of the classroom, LA's Promise provides students the information, motivation and support necessary to attend college and pursue a promising career.
Go for College is grounded in the belief that all students and their families should be informed to make a strong and personal choice about pursuing higher education. Go for College exposes the LA’s Promise student body to an array of two- and four-year, public and private colleges and universities. An LA's Promise College Access Administrator works daily with each campus’ college counselor to navigate students through the college research and selection process, preparing them to meet the requirement of applying to at least one college or university before graduation. From mandatory college trips for every 9th grader to financial aid education, Go for College creates a culture where college prep is the norm and every student has equal access to higher education. Through events such as an annual college fair and the incorporation of student College Ambassadors, a peer advisement group, students and families receive the necessary support to complete the college admission process.
